San Bernardino Co., CA – Fatal Collision on I-15 near Hodge Rd

San Bernardino County, CA (July 19, 2025) — A tragic collision on southbound Interstate 15 claimed the life of a 56-year-old man late Monday night, after a big rig struck a stalled vehicle near Barstow, prompting an emergency response and ongoing investigation.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred around 9:10 p.m, just south of Hodge Road. Authorities say a 2023 Honda Civic had come to a stop in the No. 3 lane of traffic for reasons still under review. Moments later, the sedan was rear-ended by a 2023 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling in the same direction.

The driver of the Civic, identified as Robert Matiran of Corona, was tragically killed in the impact. Investigators noted that the force of the collision sent both vehicles careening across the freeway and into the center median. The driver of the semi, a 47-year-old man from Washington, Pennsylvania, was reportedly uninjured.

Emergency personnel from CHP and local fire departments responded promptly, but sadly, Matiran was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding why the Civic had stalled and what factors may have contributed to the deadly crash.
